K5W
- Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge Special Event |
Links |
This year members of
the newly formed 599 DX Association activated Special
Event Station K5W from the Mississippi
Sandhill Crane National Wildlife
Refuge
as part of National Wildlife Refuge Week activities October 15th-17th.
As an added bonus, we also activated our
station again on Oct 23rd to help the refuge celebrate "Crane Fest".
This is an open house of sorts for the refuge with lots of special
activities planned. It was also a good opportunity for us to
demonstrate
ham radio to the public since the refuge receives a much higher than
normal number of visitors that day. In all we had 15 visitors to the
station. For both weekends we were able to log just under 400 QSOs
contacting 44 states, 9 DXCC countries and 4 other NWR Week Special
Event stations. Again this year I would like to thank ranger Doug Hunt
and the entire Mississippi Sandhill Crane NWR staff for their
assistance and support of our activity.
This is a nationwide event with ham radio activities taking place at National Wildlife Refuges around the country. Ham radio operators activated 12 or more NWRs with the primary goal of helping spread the word about our National Wildlife Refuge System.
